Programme overview

Wondering where a career in rail could take you? This Virtual Work Experience will show you what it’s like to work at an organisation that connects people up and down the country, whether that’s planning new routes, maintaining established ones, organising timetables, working on trains, or supporting the whole operation from head office. Throughout the modules, you’ll see what makes CrossCountry unique within the rail industry, and discover the different ways you could get on board.

What's included

This Virtual Work Experience programme won’t just be us explaining CrossCountry to you - you’ll be getting stuck in by completing quizzes and interactive activities to apply your newfound knowledge. At the end of the programme you’ll be supplied with a certificate to upload to LinkedIn and add to your CV, helping you stand out to employers.

Introduction to CrossCountry Trains

In this module we’ll dive in, full steam ahead, so you can learn about the wider context of CrossCountry, and why they’re an organisation worth working for. Here, we’ll cover their history, their present scope, and their future goals, as well as the values they stand by in everything they do. You’ll learn about the huge network they’re responsible for, and get a taster for just how they pull off this gigantic operation day in, day out.

Driver Operations

Our next stop will focus on how operational roles keep the railway moving, and how different teams work together to deliver safe, reliable services every day. You’ll learn about not only the structure and responsibilities of the driver operations team, but also the goals that guide day to day decision making. You’ll discover why it is so important to CrossCountry to create an environment where those keeping trains moving feel supported, valued, and recognised for the vital role they play.

Customer Experience

It’s time to check out the ways in which people in customer experience roles work together to keep customers happy at every stage of their journey. We’ll be looking at some of the roles you could find yourself in, if you’re interested in helping CrossCountry put customers at the heart of all they do. You’ll learn about the different routes into these roles, opportunities to grow and progress, and the behaviours and values that define great customer experience.

Inside Business Support Functions

If you’re more interested in an office-based role, this is your stop. In this module, we’ll be looking at roles that are just as vital for keeping the whole organisation running successfully. These include things like HR, IT, Finance, but also marketing, as well as operational roles like timetable planning. This module explores CrossCountry Trains’s office-based and support functions such as operations, HR, finance and marketing, showing how these teams contribute to running the network.

Routes into a Rail Career

It’s the end of the line, but don’t worry, our last stop will be the one that shows you exactly how you can get into any of the roles we’ve outlined in previous modules. Whether you’d prefer an apprenticeship, or a grad scheme after uni, we’ll demonstrate the routes you should consider to get there.
